Giant Puffball
Calvatia gigantea

I noticed them near the road as I drove by September 2  Today I took a closer look.  Here is what I saw:

As you see I was a bit late in discovering them.  The one on the right was about a foot in width.  I then looked into the woods and saw 3 smaller once.  About softball size:

But when I broke them open:

I saw that I was late here also.  I will watch this spot next year.
