Grafton MA

Here is the Yellow Birch that fell about 3 years ago.  It broke at the base where the fungi weakened it.

I removed some bark and exposed some reddish brown material.  For all I know this might be the natural color of the under bark.

Here is a close-up that shows no sign of pores.

On a small branch I found this fungi growing out of a crack in the birch bark.  Poria spissa?
